TAILGATING HISTORY
Some say it was at the first college football game in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton when spectators traveled by horse-drawn carriages, and grilled sausages and burgers at the “tail end” of the horse. Some suggest Yale in 1904 when a locomotive had transported a throng of starving fans to a Yale football game who decided they were going to bring food along to the next game. Still others claim it was in Green Bay 1919, when the Packers were first formed and Wisconsin farmers would back their pickup trucks around the edge of the open football field, open their tailgates to sit on and graze from a picnic basket of food as they watched “The Pack” play. My favorite story was that it was started back in the Civil War Era when people would sit on top of hills and watch the soldiers battle.
