There are so many variations on the story behind the Groom's cake but the general theme is the same...Way back somewhere in England or ancient times, after the wedding, a slice of an entirely separate cake from the wedding cake was placed in a small box and sent home with the single ladies. The ladies would put the slice under their pillows that evening and dream of their future husband. This is the origin of what we know today as the Groom's cake, although it has changed much since then. Today the Groom's cake is served as the dessert at the rehearsal dinner or commonly in the South at a separate table during the reception as a wow factor and second dessert.
The flavor and decor often reflects the Groom’s interests and personality. Typically chocolate and with a masculine theme. No matter what, it is always smaller than the Bride's cake. As for who pays for this cake, it really depends on the circumstances. If the Groom is designing and making decisions on it, then he pays. If the Bride wants to design and surprise the Groom with the cake at the reception, then she pays. To add a new twist to this old tradition, many couples today are having the Groom's cake made into small individual cakes, cupcakes or even cake balls! If you do want your cake cut up and sent home with guests, make sure to purchase cute little cake boxes that match your cake's theme or wedding decor! Happy Tuesday! xoxo, Julie
