Bonni Benrubi Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition, SUMMER PLACE. This exhibition expresses the vitality of the summer season through the work of contemporary photographers who capture the leisure, athleticism, heat and psychology of the season through their images.
Highlights include new work by gallery artist Karine Laval, who transports the viewer to a place of pure sensual, existential experience, as swimmers splash and shimmer among the reflective waters of her exuberant yet nostalgic color pool images.Susannah Ray documents the surfing subculture of Rockaway Beach, NY, which makes up for the lack of allure and lifestyle of West Coast surfing with a surfeit of heart, dedication and soul. The work of photographer Liz Lantz likewise goes against the grain of popular imagination, focusing her camera on the women surfers contributing to the history and evolution of a traditionally male dominated sport. Blair Seagramdeconstructs and reconstructs the surf and its riders in her large format, digitally manipulated panoramic images, while the photography of Caryl Englander captures the specific color and atmosphere of the coast.
Finally, evoking quiet introspection as the summer season turns to autumn, the work ofChristopher Payne documents the decaying remnants of the monumental civic impulse apparent in the nation's abandoned psychiatric hospitals.
In addition to these highlights, SUMMER PLACE will include the work of other emerging artists such as Samuel Powers and Adam Raphael, as well as established photographers such as Pete Turner, Wout Berger and LeRoy Grannis.
